A Tibetan Acupressure Treatment

The Tibetan Acupressure System (TAS) is an ancient art of healing which uses special finger pressure on the body’s reflex points to awaken a person’s self-curative abilities. When these reflex points are activated, blood circulation and the body’s life force are stimulated to aid healing.

As the body’s healing energies realign, the energy can better flow to correct ailments and alleviate tension and stress. Tibetan Acupressure is also an effective means to relax and achieve balance in a calm and soothing environment.

A classical Tibetan Acupressure treatment is done with the client sitting upright in a chair.  Energy is believed to move upward through the body and more efficiently when the client is in this upright orientation. The client is required to remove their shoes but otherwise will remain fully clothed.

The session begins with the practitioner and client connecting energies. This is done by the practitioner’s hand being placed on the client’s knee. The client closes their eyes and takes slow, deep breaths to begin the relaxation process; breathing assists the healing energies to filter slowly throughout the body.

The first body map to be addressed is accessed through the pressure points on the feet. Various key points are stimulated on the feet, by pressure and a pull of the finger with a slight twist of the wrist. The pressure is applied with one of the first two fingers and in some areas with the thumb. There is no rubbing or holding of the points. The practitioner moves from the feet towards the legs and knees, then continues onto the pressure points of the hands and arms, neck and shoulders, back and finishes at the head. The stimulation of acupressure reflex points occurs through a penetrating touch; it is mildly electrical in nature and begins the flow of soothing energy immediately upon release of the point.

Many things may be experienced during the treatment. Some clients have laughed, cried, sighed or coughed – displaying the different ways of releasing blocked energies in the body. Occasionally some may see colours or images. Some experience tingling sensations, or feelings of heat from within their bodies. Most often, clients have described feeling deep relaxation and soothing energy flowing through their bodies.  This feeling of calm usually lasts during and after treatments. Many clients find relief from their chronic conditions for many days and with a series of sessions, some conditions recede and often clear completely.

The treatment duration is 45 minutes to one hour. However, many clients experience such intense relaxation that they may require 5-15 minutes to return from their meditation-like state. The sensation is profoundly relaxing physically, mentally and emotionally. This feeling of peace and calm may last several days.

Treatments can also be performed on a massage table if sitting is uncomfortable, if the client’s condition prohibits sitting upright or as a means for a massage therapist to incorporate points from the system into their massage protocol.
